Instructions: Title: Research Project Due Date: End of Week #7 This research assignment is designed to challenge the student to be creative as well as demonstrate subject matter knowledge. You are also challenged to learn a new skill/practice an existing skill in applying PowerPoint (or OpenOffice) software to your research. You will not find the “answer” for this assignment in the text or any other single location – this is an integrative assignment that requires you, the student, to create your presentation template and apply your own knowledge on the assigned topic. You MUST stick to the topic projects turned in that are not on the topic will not be considered for grading. Please create a 12-15 slide (to approximate a 15 minute spoken presentation) PowerPoint presentation discussing the way that the following geographic concepts are represented in in a particular food item or cuisine: 1. Regions 2. Diffusion 3. Cultural landscape 4. Distance decay Be sure to address these SPECIFIC geographic terms and concepts. You may use “subsets” of these definitions (e.g. contagious diffusion) if such subsets exist. Be sure to refer to your text and glossary to ensure you completely understand these concepts. Be sure to present clear citations and mature work. Make the most of each slide to show effective communication – one of APUS's primary learning objectives for all students in all classes (see syllabus for detail). This exercise will require some research on your part and you are to use legitimate sources. Be careful of Wikipedia or other “wiki” sites. Try for official and creditable sites and sources. If you do not have access PPT, please use OpenOffice.org or contact me immediately. The exercise has three components: 1) show you are very familiar with the topic; 2) become familiar with PowerPoint software as everyone uses it in business these days, and ;3) express your knowledge in a presentation format – efficient and understandable, captivating for your audience.

Research Project – Assignment Brief

Important
·         Research Project will consist of two parts as follows:
Part 1: Research Project – Presentation
Weight: 10%
Description:
Students will make a presentation on their project, with a specified time allotted to each individual in the group.  Students will be assessed on their understanding of the research methods, research topic and the major findings.  The presentation will be marked against pre-set criteria, and recorded on video/audio for evidence.  Feedback will be given to the groups on the research based on the presentations, and this has to be incorporated/implemented in the final research report submitted by the group

Part 2: Research Project – Final Report – Group work
Weight: 20%
Description: 
The students will submit the Final Research Report based on their work during the course.  One report will be submitted per group, submission to be done through BB Learn and checked with SafeAssign.  The feedback that was given by the Professor during the project presentation will be incorporated/implemented by the students in this final report.

APA style formatting and referencing should be used in all the sections of the report.

Please see the next pages for detailed report format required for this assignment as well as the marking scheme for the report.




Report Format 
1.    Cover Page; Table of Contents
2.    Abstract.
Clearly state the research topic, the research question, expected outcomes, and possible variables. You should indicate what the reader is about to read in this paper.
3.    Literature review
a.    Summary of the articles reviewed by all the group members to be included in the final report.
The summary for each article should be three to four lines (or more), should not be quoted direct from the abstract, and should add appropriate referencing.
b.    Summary and Conclusion.
The conclusion should draw all the evidence from the literature reviews together, and clearly state the implications for your research.
4.    Methodology
a.    This section should include the method of data collection, justification for the method, information about the population and the sample for the study, and reference to the questionnaire.
5.    Analysis and Findings
a.    The analysis should describe the methods used for grouping, categorizing and analysing the data.
b.    Your analysis should utilize statistics software if necessary, and include graphs, and charts to present information in appropriate form.
c.     The strengths and weaknesses of the collected data should be clearly indicated.
6.    Conclusion
a.    Based on the literature review, data collected and analysis, the report should provide answer(s) to the research question, and indicate the implications of the results.
b.    This section should also indicate the limitations of the research and/or recommendations for future studies.

7.    References and Bibliography
This should be correctly formatted – using APA referencing, and include all articles that have been referenced in the review, as well as any new resources that have been referred to in the primary research and report-writing stages.
8.    Appendix
a.    Questionnaire; Sample responses (optional); Charts; Tables

b.    All research articles reviewed.

The report should be a summary for a published, refereed journal papers (preferably from Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Financial Markets Research, International Journal of Financial markets, or similar journal. In addition, students may consult pro-quest on-line research periodical which exposes them to the recent dissertations and theses conducted all over the world).The number of papers in the report should at least equal the number of the students

• The students are encouraged to choose research papers that address the Qatar financial markets or institutions or studies that addressed the region. The summary should discuss the main objective of the paper, the motivation for conducting the paper (the originality), the research methodologies (the study model and the main variables), results and the main findings and recommendations
The size of the report should be around 1000 words (excluding references) and be written n in an academic style (abstract, Introduction, Literature, methodology, empirical analysis and results, and references list).

• The project will be allocated 8 marks depending on the content, academic referencing and well structure. Student understanding for topic being addressed through his participation in presentation will affect highly his final score ( 4 marks).

The structure of the project should be observed: What, why, how conceptually, and practically is the research restructured. Thus, your understanding of how the research ideas are flowed reflects your understanding for the topic you are addressing.
Marking guidelines Project Report
Following are the guidelines given to the students of what they should include in their project:

Structure and Contents of Project report: The Project Report is an outline of your 5 points Project, providing information on the “What, Why, How conceptually and How practically” of your research. The purpose is to show the reader you have managed to arrange your broad Project research ideas into a logical account of research; and your work is justifiable and meaningful. It requires you to think clearly about your research objectives, research methods and relevant literature. 
The following information needs to be included in your Project Report:

a. Title of your Project Report and abstract
Indicating the focus of your research

b. Introduction-Background ( you will rewrite it again in the end)
This section should explain the rationale and the context for identifying your research plans. You should provide sufficient background information on the issues you want to research for the reader to be able to understand the rest of your Project as well as its value. If you focus on an organization you should provide enough organizational information to put your research into context.

c. Literature Review
This should be presented under a separate heading. This review is a detailed critical analysis of the literature provides an identification of themes from academic and other relevant recent and/or historically important literature which acts as the basis for your study and clarifies where your study fits into this debate.


d. Research Objectives and Research Questions
Your research objectives should make it clear to the reader exactly what is being planned by the proposed research. Well-defined objectives should identify what is to be analyzed, and to what purpose. Your objectives should provide sufficient scope for a Project of this size, but also be achievable within the resources available to you. They should not be vague or too general and should be leading to observable outcomes.

The research objectives will be used by the reader to judge the rest of your report, so make sure that your proposed research design, data collection and analysis fit with the objectives.
Specific research questions (or hypotheses, if relevant) should be easily identifiable in your Project Report.

e. Research Design (Methods and Methodology)
Overall view of the approach and methods chosen to achieve your research objectives, as well as a justification of these choices. Provide information and justification for the research methodology you propose (for instance case study, cross sectional, time trends, modeling …) and demonstrate your reading on the topic. 

If relevant, it should also detail particular areas your research will focus on, such as sectors of industry or regions and the identity of your research population.

f. Data collection and analysis
In fieldwork based Projects, provide details of the data which need to be collected; the way in which you intend to collect these data (for instance investigation of secondary data, survey, questionnaires) and the way you intend to analyses these data.

Be as precise as possible. For instance: for secondary data collection, specify the exact data sources you use; for surveys specify survey strategy, population and sample size; for interviews specify interview population, interview duration and way of analysis etcetera.

Provide clear information on access to this data: have you made sure all necessary data is available to you? If relevant, do you have the agreement of essential people to use certain data or conduct interviews? Is your Project agreed with the organization you focus on if this is necessary?

Are there any other particular ethical considerations you need to abide by in your research?

g. Analysis
Now you will analyze your data using different methods and explain the results.
h. Conclusion
This part should summarize your work giving brief information about:
• your research question
• the methodology used
• The most important results and its relation with the literature.
• Your contribution what should we learn from you work.

Abstract , title page, table of contents, list of tables, list of graphs, introduction, literature review, data, methodology , empirical analysis, conclusion, references list, and appendices for your data and other information

1. Research question (10 points)
Write a research question dealing with an area of comparative politics.
Better answers will (i) be about comparative politics (ii) ask an interesting question.
2. Background (30 points)
Find 3 academic sources that help with answering the question above. Provide the
bibliographic citations in CJPS style (http://www.cpsaacsp.
ca/pdfs/Editorial%20Style%20Guidelines%202008.pdf), and write 2-3
paragraphs discussing how these 3 sources help answer your question.
Better answers will synthesize the 3 sources rather than simply summarize them in sequence.

3. Hypothesis (20 points)
Write a hypothesis. Defend your choice.
Better hypotheses will contain a causal argument. Better defenses will link the hypothesis to
the research question and the background research.

4. Case selection (20 points)
Choose the cases you want to analyze in this assignment. Defend your choices.
The specific choices of the cases don’t matter too much. Better defenses will consider the cases themselves (whether or not they are appropriate to the question), the number of cases and the relationship of the cases to the comparative method.

5. Data source (20 points)
Identify where you are going to find the data (it has to be a real source). Give the
citation. Justify why this source is appropriate.
Better answers here will have chosen appropriate data sources and justified their selection.
