Set in the near future, the movie Gattaca (1997) presents a world in which genetic engineering has become the norm, and society is stratified not according to class or race, but rather by genetic potential. After a semester of discussing the way that science and society are intertwined, what themes do you see in Gattaca that reflect some of the issues we've discussed in class?
For instance, how do themes of eugenics permeate this movie? How does this reflect optimism in science? How does it reflect criticisms of science? How are issues of science and commercialism present? What about issues of reductionism and holism? These are just some issues, and there are plenty more. Choose one or two themes for your paper.
In your essay, you should not only analyze aspects of the movie, but also draw from the class readings (Larson, Wolfe, Maienschein, etc). To write an effective paper, you will need to first watch the movie (I have placed two copies on reserve at Randall Library; it is also available through services such as Netflix) and then use some of the historical examples we've discussed to illustrate the themes you've chosen to analyze in Gattaca. Overall, be sure to use plenty of examples (i.e. details!) to back up your claims and find examples and arguments from lecture and our secondary readings that provide the evidence you need to be convincing. Remember, you need to make sure to give weight to your arguments by drawing on some of the historical episodes that we've discussed in class.
Format
Papers should be 5-7 pages double-spaced with one-inch margins and choose Times New Roman, Cambria, or something very similar in 12-point font. There is no need for a title page or works cited page; merely start the paper with your name, my name, and the class section.
When you quote from something we've read, make sure you cite the author's name and page number in parentheses after the quote, e.g. (Wolfe, p. 22). If you quote from Gattaca, you do not need to include a parenthetical citation, but be sure to make it clear that you are quoting from the movie (e.g., In Gattaca, the character Vincent Freeman states, “We now have discrimination down to a science.”) If you are going to use a quote that is more than 4 lines long you should put it in an indented block citation form. Refrain from doing outside research beyond the movie and our materials from this class, as I am only interested in what you think.

English and Literature

Purpose:

Most of us use critical reading strategies everyday to effectively process all of the information we are consistently bombarded with. This assignment allows you continue to explore ideas of reading and writing rhetorically, as you will use different strategies to write your summary and your strong response.

The Assignment:

This assignment will have two parts:

In this unit, we will be focusing on Part 1, the Summary.

The Summary

Summarize in 150-200 words the article your instructor has chosen from the assignment. If you have the 9th edition, please use “Working at McDonald's” on pages 280-283 (or pages 283-286 in the 8th edition). If you have the 7th edition, please use “Nickel and Dimed” on pages 270-273. In this summary, you should relay the article’s main points, completely and accurately, in your own words. If you find yourself in a situation in which the author’s words needed to be quoted directly (perhaps for emphasis), you must make it clear that these words are the author’s by using quotation marks appropriately. You will not want to quote anything over one sentence in length, and you will want to limit yourself to no more than 2-3 direct quotes, if you use any at all. Remember that the whole point of this portion of the assignment is for you to restate the author’s points objectively in your own words.
In general, I recommend you structure your first sentence something like this:

In “Working at McDonald's,” Amitai Etzioni argues that…

OR

In “Nickel and Dimed,” Barbara Ehrenreich argues that…

This will function as the thesis statement of your summary, so this first sentence will need to convey the main point(s) of the article to give your reader an overall view.

Please be sure to review the Submitting Your Assignment of Unit #3 section for specific instructions on how you should turn in your work for grading. The Summary & Critical Response Essay with both required sections is due at the end of Unit #3.

***************************************************************************************
In the last unit, we focused on crafting the summary. In this unit, we will focus on the second half of this paper: the critical response. The paper (including both sections–the summary and the critical response) will be due at the end of this unit.

The Assignment:

This assignment has two parts:

In this unit, we will be focusing on Part 2, the Critical Response.

Critical Response

Write a 1 ½ to 2 page response to the article your instructor has chosen from the assignment. If you have the 9th or 8th edition, please use “Working at McDonald's”–on pages 280-283 in your 9th edition textbook (or 283-286 in the 8th edition textbook). If you have the 7th edition, please use “Nickel and Dimed” on pages 270-273. Before you even begin drafting, you will want to decide on the terms of your response. Once you decide on the terms (or grounds) of your response, you’ll want to figure out how you can support your points—using logic, outside evidence—whatever is appropriate. Your response cannot be based on simply your opinion about the issue.

Please be sure to review the Submitting Your Assignment of Unit #3 section for specific instructions on how you should turn in your work for grading. The Summary & Critical Response Essay with both required sections is due at the end of Unit #3.
