Planning Service & ManufacturingPlanning Service & Manufacturing
Paper details
SCENARIO:
Smitheford Pharmaceuticals
Smitheford Pharmaceuticals was founded by a former officer in the Civil War, General Robert Smitheford, in 1878. He moved his family to Colorado Springs to aid in his wife’s tuberculosis condition. At the time, it was believed that the sunshine and high altitude had curative effects.
The company quickly grew and expanded. To improve the economies of several growing towns in Colorado, General Smitheford built additional manufacturing facilities in Pueblo, Grand Junction, Fort Collins, and Durango, Colorado.
Smitheford was an excellent leader, as demonstrated by his rapid rise in the Union Army. He used management incentives and was an early follower of Frederick Taylor on methods improvement and employee satisfaction. The company has since adopted total quality management (TQM) philosophies but has done a poor job of implementing these principles in manufacturing.
By the 1950s, Smitheford Pharmaceuticals grew to become the 6th-largest pharmaceutical firm in the United States. Expansion in manufacturing occurred in the 1970s and 1980s with operations in Canada, Puerto Rico, France, Japan, Mexico, and Brazil.
Many challenges are facing the industry today. NAFTA impacted some advantages that Canadian manufacturing might have had. Stricter FDA guidelines have made transportation of partially manufactured products more complicated; drug interactions, especially for the elderly, can seriously affect whether or not to release a new product, and manufacturing equipment has become more sophisticated, and with the advanced technology comes increase fixed costs.
You are a midlevel manager of production operations at Smitheford. You will need to look at several methods to improve efficiency and effectiveness for its area of responsibility. You will use quantitative and qualitative methods to make recommendations for the improvements.
ASSIGNMENT:
Smitheford Pharmaceuticals is facing other issues. The company had not kept up with modern manufacturing technology and was in the process of modernizing the injectable manufacturing facilities in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. There were several modernizing scenarios under analysis. Perform cost-benefit analysis calculations for 2 equipment scenarios. The data are provided below.
Scheduling the various manufacturing operations has become more complicated. In the 1990s, the Pueblo plant expanded tremendously, based on forecasts for the growth of a promising osteoporosis medication, Osto54. The facility doubled in size, mostly with tanks and processing equipment. Osto54, however, caused heightened enzyme levels in the liver and led to seven deaths in the elderly because of drug interactions. Smitheford faced the loss of millions of dollars in liability suits and had excess intermediate manufacturing capacity in Pueblo.

Two years ago, a new immune system treatment, Ultamyacin, was discovered by a Smitheford researcher. The drug could be manufactured at the Pueblo facility for the bulk manufacturing, but the final manufacturing steps could be made in Puerto Rico for final purification and then sent to Fort Collins for final manufacturing into sterile bottles for injection.

Smitheford leadership has narrowed the decision making down to 2 options. The first is a higher technology option in one location, and the other is a lower technology option in several locations.

High Technology
Centralized Location Low Technology
Decentralized
Annual Fixed Cost $620,000 $110,000
Variable Cost/Product 16.31 18.89
Estimated Annual Production

(in number of products) Year 1 100,000 100,000
Year 5 170,000 170,000
Year 10 225,000 225,000

Use applicable business formulas to determine costs for both options.

Consider the following questions:
•Which is the lead cost alternative in Years 1, 5, and 10?
•How much would the variable cost per unit have to be in Year 5 for the automated alternative to justify the additional annual fixed cost of the automated alternative over the manual alternative?
•Determine what other factors should be considered when deciding the following: ◦When to centralize manufacturing
◦When to opt for higher technology options

Conduct one informational interview with a person who is either currently an expatriate worker or has previously worked abroad on an expatriate work assignment.

Assignment 3: Interview with an Expatriate

Learning Objectives Assessed:
Conduct one informational interview with a person who is either currently an expatriate worker or has previously worked abroad on an expatriate work assignment.
Write a 2-3 pages report about what you have learned about the challenges that the expatriate faced while working in a country different from their own. You may keep the identity of the expatriate anonymous if they wish so.
Include a short section in your report that compares the two countries along the cultural dimensions provided by the GlobeSmart Assesment Profile. Try preparing this before the interview so that you can ask the expatriate worker where they stand and if they had any difficulties based on differences in these dimensions.
Make sure that you include the following areas in your report:
• Is the person that you interviewed currently working in an expatriate assignment? Or does he or she know enough about it to talk to you about it?
• Why did you choose the person that you interviewed?
• What cross-cultural issues did the expatriate worker face when they first moved for their overseas assignment?
• How did they manage to deal with those issues?
• Were they provided any help by the organization that they were working for?
• If they are still working in the expatriate work assignment, what issues are they currently facing?
• Did it become easier for them to adjust with time? Did they display any of the characteristics of Adjusting and Over-adjusting highlighted by the Pendulum Phenomenon?
• How important are relationships in the job that they are/were doing?
• What recommendations or advice can they give you for being successful if you were in their place? Are there any skills that can make your experience easier?
• What are the main insights that you gained from the interview?
• What is your plan for developing the cross-cultural skills necessary to be effective in an overseas job assignment?

Educational Reformers’ Influences on Maria MontessoriGroup Essay #2
Educational Reformers’ Influences on Maria Montessori
Dr. Montessori's revolutionary work with children's education commenced at the beginning of the twentieth
century (1907). More than 107 years later, her approach to education remains remarkably fresh and in tune
with modern times and neuro-psychologists found that she has designed a relevant blueprint of the activities
of the child’s brain. The Montessori movement has spread throughout the world. What Maria Montessori
started as a scientific research has flourished as a monumental humanitarian and pedagogical endeavor which
is today a world-wide success.
Despite the fact that Maria Montessori is one of the most important educational reformer of the twentieth
century, she has been herself greatly influenced by a number of significant figures such as Plato in his
Republic, John Locke, the British empiricist, John Amos Comenius, champion of universal education,
Fantappie from Italy, Pereira from Spain, Percy Nunn in his book Education, Ovide Decroly from
Belgium, defender of initiative and self-discovery, Rosa and Carolina Agazzi from Italy in their work with
young children, Alessandro Chiapelli, Bernardino Varisco and Benedetto Croce, Italian philosophers on
Early Education, Wilhelm Max Wunndt, famous physiologist and psychologist, the American John
Dewey, renowned for his attachment to integration of activity in education (“Learning by doing”, Giuseppe
Sergi, Italian anthropologist, Rousseau, the apostle of freedom, who wrote “Émile” a book regarding
personalized education of young children, Froebel, the originator of kindergarten, Pestalozzi, who believed
that children learned through activity, Itard, who cared for the wild boy, Seguin who’s study of idiots was
substantial and Seguin who developed the 3 period lesson without forgetting the adepts of the Theosophical
Society.
Borrowing here and there, reflecting and meditating, amalgamating some elements to her own deeply felt
beliefs, Maria Montessori structured her own approach that will become famous and still fresh after more
than a century from the first casa Dei Bambini in Rome.
This Group Essay # 2 consists of searching what elements Dr. Montessori borrowed from one influential
figures: (Comenius, Locke, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Seguin, Itard …others) to insert in her own
approach to education.
1) Please form a group of 2-3 maximum and decide on which reformer your group will work. (please refrain
to research the same education reformer chosen by another group of three).
2) On one hand, please choose and investigate one of the precursors. Make-up a short biography and report
relevant elements of his/her original philosophy and practice that will be obvious in the Montessori
approach.
3) On the other hand, describe how Dr. Montessori’s own philosophy and practice were influenced by your
chosen precursor’s ideas then explore how they have been implemented within the Montessori classroom.
4) Please find two classmates with whom you want to work on this essay and fill the following page prior to
hand it to your Master Teacher in your training location.
5) On Wednesday January 7th at the Brampton training location, or Friday 9th at the Downtown Montessori
location or the next day, Saturday January 10th 2015 at the Mississauga and Markham training locations,
your team presents in front of the group its findings (10 minutes), not in reading your paper but in giving
great lines comparing both educational reformers in showing who was the person who influenced
Montessori and how, what are the strong aspects in the thoughts and practices of the person who influenced
Montessori and how she made hers some of the intuitions and practices and blend them into her
methodology.
6) The mark received from this group presentation is given by your Master Teacher to each members of your
group and based on the quality of the presentation in front of your classmates, your understanding of the
evidence of the influential aspect and the relevance of the application in the Montessori approach to
education, the use of references and the way your presentation enriched the whole class.

ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT (about Peru)ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT (about Peru)
Paper details
Conduct library and web research about your assigned country, and answer EACH question below (1, 2, and 3) with a paragraph of 200-250 words. You must use at least TWO academic sources in addition to data sources from Part 1 of the assignment.
Think of this as a 600-750-word position paper (but answer each question in a separate paragraph). A position paper is an essay that explains, justifies and recommends some particular plan or policy. Your paper should cite all sources used, including those from Part 1.

Research:
Planners working at the scale of the entire country must consider the complexities of that country. As you gather more information, think about your country’s current situation, particularly conditions that confer advantages and disadvantages for economic development. Some factors you might want to consider as you gather information include the following: (You do not need to include all of these; this is just a list to help get you started).
o Key resources such as energy, natural resources
o Current economic activities, including exports, imports, major sectors, and their distribution across the different regions of the country
o Institutional/political factors (international trade agreements, special economic zones, export processing)
o Human development indicators (education and literacy, health, workforce, gender equality)
o Cultural diversity and age structure (in other words, is there a large upcoming working-age cohort, or are there many young or old people to support?)
o Environmental issues
o Technology availability

Essay Question 1: Develop a plan (35 points)
Formulate and describe a new economic development plan that your country could implement. Please focus on just one or two major goals or programs; we do not expect you to solve all of your country’s difficulties or imagine a complete overhaul of its economy. If you choose too many goals or programs you will not have room or time to describe each sufficiently.

Essay Question 2: Explain the rationale for your plan (35 points)
Explain why you think this plan is appropriate given what you know from data collection and additional sources. Describe how your plan capitalizes on the country’s human or other resources and/or helps to overcome the country’s challenges. It might help to indicate what obstacles your country will need to overcome in order to pursue further economic development. This is a good place to use the outside research you have done to justify your plan. Make sure that you clearly specify the advantages and disadvantages of your plan.
Essay Question 3: Explore possible results of the plan (20 points)
Suggest who might be the potential winners AND losers WITHIN your assigned country if this plan were implemented; why would these people (or environmental resources) enjoy gains or suffer negative consequences?

Format and submission:
• Write about a paragraph (200-250 words) to answer each of the questions. Answer each question separately. Label each question 1, 2, and 3.

• Please TYPE your answers. They should be double-spaced and in a 12-point font. Your name and the name of the country assigned to you should be in the upper left hand corner of the first page. Your name and the page number should be on the header of every page.

• Provide citations for ALL evidence you present (including that used for previous assignments). Citations should be in APA format and include both in-text (parenthetic) citations and a bibliography at the end of the assignment. Please note again that you must conduct research beyond the CIA, Census Bureau, and UN websites used in Part 1 to complete Assignment 2 successfully.

• Please save your file as LastName_country.doc or docx

• SUBMISSION: Upload your answers as one file to Safe Assign via the link provided in Blackboard. You must upload the document as a Microsoft Word Document (.doc. or .docx), NO .PDF or .ODX!! Technical difficulties happen, so plan ahead and submit early. **If you experience technical difficulties, please contact the Division of Information Technology Help Desk and have them create a ticket documenting your attempt to upload the assignment and bring this to class. Late assignments are not accepted!
