Discuss some of the acting tools and actor/character elements used by one or more of the actors in your film, referring to terms discussed in lectures.Theater 120A – Fall 2014 – Final Exam Paper Instructions
3-4 page paper due Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the START of class (3 p.m.).
Assignment
Part One: Choose one of the films we've viewed in class from week 5 on. These films
are: The Graduate, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Cinema Paradiso, American
Beauty and City of God. Discuss some of the acting tools and actor/character elements
used by one or more of the actors in your film, referring to terms discussed in lectures.
This means you must focus on the acting in the film, not the themes of the film or the
structure of the story! You should be as specific as possible when detailing the acting.
Address at least four of the following in your analysis: discovery in the moment,
character objective/obstacle/action (these count together as one topic), unfocused
objectives vs. focused objectives, beats, representational acting, presentational acting,
sending and receiving, arc of a scene, time, space, juxtaposition, montage, blocking,
choreography, character subtext, performance within a performance, realism, formalism,
exposition (or expository scenes), imaging, introduction of a character, entrances/exits,
doors/windows/frames and character, private moments, relationship construction,
ongoing physical activity, physical character work, extreme physical conditions,
subjective vs. objective relationships, given circumstances, status, endowing props,
straight men/women, foil characters, center of pain, off screen character development,
painting a picture, emotional life, commentator characters, realization, twodimensional/
three-dimensional characters, and so on.
Even though many of these terms are used to describe cinema in many facets, you must
discuss the ways they are related to acting and performance.
Part Two: Compare and contrast the performance(s) you analyze in Part One with the
performance(s) from one of the films that were assigned for the midterm (The Gold
Rush, Bringing Up Baby, Double Indemnity or North by Northwest). In which ways are
they similar? In which ways do they differ? Use at least two points from the list above.
The points DO NOT need to be the exact points you made in your midterm. You may
even discuss another film from the midterm assignment than the one you originally did.
Be specific in your observations and opinions. Support your points with examples.
Demonstrate how the qualities of the terms in the list above interweave, i.e., How does an
objective play in an expository scene or how does an action work with a discovery in the
moment, how does a center of pain become an obstacle and how is it played, etc.
The paper is to be 3-4 pages in length in total, double spaced with standard one inch
margins using 12 pt Times New Roman font only.
Your paper will constitute 30% of your overall class grade.
2
Grading will be based on the following:
–Your ability to clearly demonstrate an understanding of the ideas from class lectures
and how they relate to your chosen film (in regards to the acting and performance in your
film/s). (Make sure to follow the instructions from above.)
–Cogency of examples given.
–Clarity of writing style and correct English usage.
Additional notes:
–Be specific in your observations. Detail what the actor is doing. Avoid generalizations.
–Do not write extensively about the plot. The purpose of the paper is not to describe the
story in the film, but to demonstrate your understanding of the topics covered in class.
Excessive plot description will result in the lowering of your score.
–This is not a research paper. Material about the film you may find in outside textbooks
or on the internet may be interesting but will ultimately be inappropriate for the purposes
of this assignment and will lower your score.
–Do not write an extensive introduction or conclusion.
–When writing about a specific moment or scene in the film, you must notate the time it
takes place in the movie using a simple parenthetical, for example, “When Susan feigns
an injury (36:27)…”
–There will be no bibliography or footnotes as there are no references to reading material
in this paper.
–The term “actor” refers to both male and female performers.
–All of the films from this list are available on DVD or online streaming. The films are
also available on DVD for screening at the UCLA Media Library (in Powell). Other
sources to consider are the local city and county libraries. I suggest that you view your
chosen film several times.
— If you choose to write about The Gold Rush, make sure you watch the original silent
version (which is 93 minutes). If you rent or check-out the DVD, this version of the film
is found on Disk 2, Special Features. If you choose to write about Cinema Paradiso,
make sure you watch the U.S. theatrical version (which is 123 minutes).
–Please submit your paper to Turnitin.com in addition to the hard copy you’ll be handing
in. While the hard copy is due December 11th at 3:00pm, you may submit the electronic
version to Turnitin by December 14 at 5:00pm.
