Independent Study Assignment: Social Justice as a Theme
Opening Remarks: This is NOT a comparison to The Kite Runner. The essay will be based on just your independent novel.
Social justice is defined as “… promoting a just society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity.” It exists when “all people share a common humanity and therefore have a right to equitable treatment and opportunity within a society. In conditions of social justice, people are not discriminated against, nor their welfare and well-being constrained or prejudiced on the basis of gender, sexuality, religion, political affiliations, age, race, belief, disability, location, social class, socioeconomic circumstances, or other characteristics of background or group membership. Social justice is generally equated with the notion of equality or equal opportunity in society. (John Rawls, 2003)
Big Ideas: Are we a just society? How have social justice issues changed over time? What work still needs to be done?
During this Independent Study Unit, you will read a novel and write a formal argumentative essay exploring how the novel functions as a criticism of or a challenge to the assumptions, attitudes and opportunities of the society in which it is set and thus on a broader level to the world we live in.
Your essay must have a clear thesis that you prove throughout the essay. The thesis must centre on how the novel is a reflection and criticism of society (in terms of social justice issues) and specifically what the author is trying to communicate through his or her exploration.
Aim for an essay of approximately 1200 words in length.
You are expected to include a detailed analysis supported by relevant quotations from your novel. These references must be properly incorporated into the essay and documented using parenthetical documentation. (See note in google drive)
You will have to do some research on the social justice issue(s) featured in your novel. This research will be included at the beginning of your essay so the reader has detailed information about the issues and events that are featured in the novel. During your research you must consult at least 5 sources. Your essay must include a bibliography of these sources. See the library website for a proper bibliography format. The discussion (in your essay) of the real issues must include 2 quotes from your research.
