Should Adults Have the Right to Carry a Concealed Handgun?
Itro: Should be 6-8 sentences.
Broad statement about your topic
More specific sentence leading to the question you are going to ask.
State the actual question you are debating (Is college worth it?)
Present a general statement as to why some think it is (There are those that believe college is worth it because of the many benefits is provides the alum.)
Present a general statement as to why some think it isn’t (However, others argue that college is the same as throwing your money away.)
Your thesis/ your position. I believe a degree is worth it because it will significantly increase your future financial outlook and it provides more career options down the road.
This is your first point (mine would be the $ benefits) I would make my point in my words, then find 2 quotes from the website to support me. After each quote, you need to explain what they mean in your own words (What Michael Jopps is saying is that school…..) Be sure to identify the person you are quoting and where they wrote the quote before you quote them. Michael Jopps, in his article “College Rocks” writes, “………..”
This is your second point from your thesis and is structured the same as the first body paragraph – 2 quotes to support your second point.
This is the “They Say” section. You will use two quotes from people against your position. You will explain the quotes in your own words, but you will only use one paragraph for the opposing view.
This is your rebuttal. You will use one paragraph to refute/or counter the opposing points you just wrote in the previous paragraph – again you need two quotes from sources.
Conclusion. This is a short, 3 to 4 sentence paragraph just summing up what you wrote.
this is the structure but different topic then college education

A common rhetorical strategy used in writing is called definition or extended definition writing. In this type of writing, you define a subject in significant detail. This rhetorical strategy is very commonly required on essay exam questions in many college classes. You might be asked to define the ozone layer, a Greek philosophy, a historical battle, or the various stages of human development. Being proficient in definition writing can be very useful!
Definition writing can be approached in many different ways. For example, you can define a subject by providing a detailed explanation, by explaining the history of the subject, or by comparing and / or contrasting the subject to something the reader may more readily understand, etc. You will often use multiple techniques in a single paper.
For this third formal assignment, you will be writing a definition essay about a specific group. This can be a group you admire or dislike. Some examples might include: a human rights group, like Amnesty International; a civil liberties group, like the American Civil Liberties Union; a controversial group, like Westboro Baptist Church; a health advocacy group, like the Susan G. Komen Foundation; a professional organization, like the American Psychological Association or the Oklahoma Education Association; a specific successful company, like Apple or Target; a specific sports team, like the Oklahoma City Thunder; a specific school, like the University of Tulsa or Harvard; a specific religion, like Christianity, Islam, or Buddhism; a specific denomination, like Mormonism; or a specific religious group, like your own church, mosque, or temple.
You will create a multi-faceted definition essay in which you define the group you choose. In order to define the group, you will, most likely, offer description (mission, funding, founders, etc.) and history, but you are also welcome to add any other technique from the “Definition Writing” handout.
Most importantly, this essay must be completely unbiased. You may not insert your own opinions about the group, nor should you come across as “preachy,” critical, or obsessive. This should be a simple unbiased definition of the group you choose.
Do not use first-person pronouns (I, me, my) in this essay unless you are telling a completely necessary story about yourself. Since this essay should be as unbiased as possible, stories displaying your personal involvement with or against the group are discouraged.
You will, most likely, find your information for this essay through Internet research or interviews. You may use any credible website you find, but you may not – EVER—use Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not considered a credible source because it can be altered by users.
Since you are using outside information, you will also be documenting that information in MLA format. Since this will be your first attempt at formal, MLA documentation, I will be more lenient than I will be on the final formal assignment in this class, but I do expect in-text citations and a works cited page.
Try to summarize most of the information you find in your own words instead of using direct quotations. Use direct quotations only if you cannot find another way to convey that information or if the quote is especially powerful or important. In-text citations go after each direct quote, but they can be placed after every “chunk” of summarized information (for example, at the end of a summarized paragraph).
As always, this will be a formal essay, and as such, it should be in standard essay format. You should include proper paper format, a creative title, an introduction, a thesis statement, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
