City bank
Individual Research Project & Presentation:  Required to prepare and present a substantial project which researches and analyzes a situation, issue, or crisisfaced by a major corporation anywhere in the world that includes business, government and societal dimensions.  For example, the BP oil spill (sorry, can't use that one).

The 3 elements of this project are:

10 points – Thesis statement & project synopsis
36 points – Executive Summary
54 points – Presentation

Executive Summary: Leaders in business, government, and in communities are very busy and process tons of information.  This means that the executive summary is an essential gateway for effectively and efficiently communicating with and framing your content for these leaders.  The essence of an executive summary is being succinct in communicating all necessary and salient information, leaving the reader with a reasonably accurate understanding of what you're attempting to communicate.

Students are expected to know (or learn) how to write an effective executive summary.  In this regard, students are encouraged to research how to write an executive summary at the SUNY College at Brockport library (any of the librarians can assist you as needed), or through other resources such as the internet.

Five-to-seven minute Oral Presentation (54 points) of his or her paper using PowerPoint software.   Presentations will be scheduled before hand, so students will be expected to deliver a professional-quality presentation including wardrobe and a well-rehearsed delivery.  If a student is not ready to present on their assigned date, they will automatically lose twenty (20) points on their individual assignment.  The individual assignment is worth 100 points.

Students are required to identify, analyze and discuss in dynamic detail five different stakeholders (ie. Shareholders, Government, Customers, Employees, General Public {including the environment}, and Special Interest Groups) who were involved, influenced, made decision about, and/or were impacted by the situation.

While some of the research will come from the organization’s own sources such as annual reports and promotional material, students are expected to also cite third party sources that report the activities of a corporation, its political involvement, its environmental record, its hiring practices, its socially (ir)responsible activities, and anything pertinent to the issue.  These may include (but are not in any way limited to) news articles, regulatory investigations, Congressional inquiries, special interest group actions, court proceedings, etc.

This project is intended to be a substantive intellectual exercise with critical analysis and thought, and NOT simply a parroting of facts researched.  In other words, I want to know what YOU think and WHAT you've learned, vs. a mere description or history lesson.  In your discussion you should be asking and answering questions like WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, WHY NOT (and also add HOW).

Students are also expected to research, analyze, and discuss the business, government, and society dynamics of the subject situation.  In other words, considerable focus should be on the interplay between and influence of/on these 3 dimensions.
All papers and projects are to be typed and properly spaced using Times Roman font in 12 point.  You may use the APA, MLA or Chicago Manual of Style     Citation Format when citing resources used.

Must be well-organized and meet acceptable college-level writing requirements

Students may conduct research through the library, media, internet resources, interviews, observations, surveys, questionnaires, and/or other appropriate data gathering methods.

Analytical criminal profiling
Here are some notes that I promised you to help with the first piece of coursework
·         First – its 1000 words overall. BUT it made up of 800 words in the notes box on PowerPoint and 200 words on the slides.
·         Your 800 words should be spread over the slides and each bit of text you write should relate to each slide – that is it should be on the notes box for the slide it refers to
·         Referencing is needed still both in the text and of course a reference list is required – the reference list should be on the last slide and written in the way you have been taught
·         It might help to imagine that your presentation is for a group of newly appointed detectives who have some police experience but are not aware of offender profiling other than what they may have seen in the media. This, you have to advise them of an academic view
In addition please note the following
1. Text on the slides should be at least size 24 font (any font)
2. you can to embellish your points add media clips (from you tube) or pictures – neither of these will count towards the word count but they can make your presentation look better possibly
3. Your text in the notes pages should be size 12 font Arial – and these should be made in the style of a normal academic essay. Each notes page should contain your text pertinent to the slide showing an introduction, then arguments, and then analysis and the conclusion – as per the next point -if your do not know how to do the notes pages in PowerPoint please come to the tutorials!
 4. After your title slide, your first slide should be an introduction  (and into the notes pages there should be text as in a normal introduction for an essay). The slides thereafter will contain successive arguments and analysis and each slide should have a notes page containing full text relevant to that slide showing more detailed argument and analysis). References should be included in the slide and also where necessary on the slide itself
5, The final slide should be your conclusion and here your notes pages will include your concluding discussion and argument in greater detail than the slide. Also the notes pages relevant to the final slide will contain your complete reference list. your notes on the notes pages should add up in total to 800 words. Your word count on the slides themselves should add up to 200 words – so together they should be around 1000 words
6. Do not spend time describing a case – but of course to illustrate your argument you may refer to a cases or cases – most of your text should describe briefly the chosen technique but then provide analysis in greater detail
7. You will start to gain more marks if you show the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen profiling technique. Good pieces will contain a balance of both (not necessarily an equal number as your chosen profiling method will contain for example more strengths than weaknesses
8. The better pieces will also contain some (but not detailed) reference to one or more other profiling methods (you may include reference to a profiling method that we have not covered in class) . However, it is highly recommended that you use one of the profiling methods discussed in class as your main profiling theme for your discussion
9. Use other profiling methods purely for comparison (same, different, better, weaker etc). The best pieces will be the ones who can accurately compare one to the other. This shows your understanding of at least two profiling  methods, if your comparison is accurate.
10. As your main profiling method it is recommended that you use one of the following
FBI methods (also known as crime scene analysis and crime investigation anlysis)
Statistical methods (also known as scientific method or Investigative Psychology)
Geographical profiling (also known spatial analysis or environmental criminology – but both these terms are rarely applied to this type of profiling)

This is a suggested structure for your coursework (please read this in conjunction with my last sent of advice that I placed on Blackboard)
slide 1 – title slide
slide 2 introduction –
slide 3, 4, 5 – analysis
slide 6 – comparative analysis
slide 7, and possibly slide 8 – conclusions (these should emerge directly from your analysis)
Don't use a textbook Putwain and Sammons' text – this is for A level students – you are now  beyond that level
The same mesage goes for Dwyer and Putwain (angles on psychology)- these are very useful books but only for A level students! You are at level 5 now
Avoid web sites – these have not been per reviewed and tend to veer towards the descriptive anyway – and as you can see from my suggested strucutre you need now to focus on being more analytical. S
Do not be overly descriptive – remember most of your written work should be of an analytical quality. That is, any description you should give should be just enough to help the reader understand the context of your analysis. Do not therefore spend too much time on description at the expense of your analysis
Please use journal articles and text books – journal articles though sometimes difficult to read will enable you to become more analytical as you will see how authors analyse others' work. This will help you become more analytical. Also by examining the actual methodology used in the research in that journal article thi will enable you to see the strengths and weaknesses of that chosen method allow you to critique that study too! A book when citing others' research does not tend to discuss the methods used in a study but tends to just cite the findings (but not how these findings were reached). This is something that not everyone understands!
Don't forget to observe the Learning Outcomes as shown in your module handbook
Analysis is important !!! –  I have given you guidance on what analysis may mean in terms of identifying the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen profiling approach. Also it may mean examination of how useful it is to investigation professionals  – please  bear in mind your degree is Applied Criminology so some comment on its relevance to practice welcomed.

Finally please use these notes I have placed on here and you will not go far wrong if at all!

What are some problems diagnosing this illness

This time, I have decided to assign a short (five pages, not including the reference and title pages) paper concerning Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP).

You should include an introduction which will state what you know (if you have any prior knowledge) about MSbP prior to this assignment.
Do some research and tell me about MSbP.
Did you learn anything you didn't know before…or is all of this 'old hat' to you?
Do you know anyone who has committed MSbP or was a victim of MSbP?
What are some problems diagnosing this illness? Is it ever confused with anything else?
What are the chances of getting a prosecution on this type of case?
What is the evidence?
How it is investigated?
And then…wrap up in a conclusion ….did you learn anything?
You may compare MSbP and Munchausen syndrome in the body of your paper (if you would like). What is the difference?
Please type the paper, include a copy sheet with your name, class name, and assignment name – along with my name and date you submit it. Be sure to use a size 12 Times New Roman font, double spacing and spell check your work. Use APA format as well.
