Coummnity Service at Korean School

Option # 2 Community Service Paper

The student must volunteer a minimum of 6 hours of service to an organization which provides services or advocacy for one of the target groups studied Cultural Diversity (poor, homeless, problem youth, elderly, ethnic & racial historical, service or advocacy groups). Groups which advocate prejudice or discrimination are not accepted. The final paper must be typed, 6 – 7 pages, and include a written verification of the service hours signed by an organization representative.
The paper should include:
1. Introduction: Briefly describe the organization or program and how it assists one of the groups studied in Cultural Diversity (e.g. youth, seniors, etc.).
2. In more detail, describe the work you did. Some of the following may apply:
a. Interactions you had with staff (what were their attitudes?)
b. Interactions you had with clients (their attitudes, needs, problems)
c. Specific activities you participated in and responses to those activities (e.g. if you served meals to the homeless, how did they respond?)
d. Personal feelings and reactions to your work and clients – – for example, were you surprised by anything?
3. Evaluation of the program or organization. What could be improved? What are some barriers to improvement (e.g. social attitudes, lack of funding)?
4. Either mixed in with your analysis, show your understanding of the groups served by the organization in relation to information learned in Cultural Diversity. This is the most important part of your paper and should be the longest and most developed. The more you relate your experience to course content, the better. For example, if you assisted homeless people, did any of the information in “Salvaging the Self- Chapter 18- Ferguson” apply?
5. Special note: Although the community service may seem time consuming, once it is completed, the paper practically “writes itself”. Students who have done this type of paper in the past have been very enthusiastic about how much they learned. This type of paper is also an excellent means of obtaining job experience, contacts and references.

A Reading Interaction Journal is a required part of your grade. Janicaud and Frankl are to be read as assigned. Students will read the assignment, then for Janicaud write one short paragraph for each chapter, relating your reactions, feelings, thoughts, what stands out to you and why. Often, what may relate to you is something you may think of later. However, you should keep up with the Journal with each assignment. For Frankl, you need to write 2 – 3 paragraphs for each section of reading assigned. Keep the RIJ as an electronic file, adding to it with each new reading, and turn it in on the designated date. The RIJ is to be turned in to turnitin.com BEFORE is it submitted as a hard copy in class on the required date.

Experience as an HVAC Commissioning Technician
There are lots of ways you can frame your story. Consider writing “A Day in the Life of” or try interviewing yourself or a co-worker. Personalize your story by adding in your reflections, we don't just want to know when and where you worked, but also what you learned, what you enjoyed, and why. For instance:
•How you overcame a challenge, and the lessons you learned from it (Surviving Your First Co-op)
•Projects you worked on and the new skills and experiences you gained from them
•What you enjoyed most about your co-op placement
•How this co-op experience has confirmed or changed your career goals/interests 
•Additional insights about the role, company, field or industry you think other students would be interested in or should know
•Personal reflections on your overall experience
