Assignment 2: Analysis of the Selected Agency


As a consultant, you need to develop an in-depth analysis and evaluation of the selected agency’s planning, organizational design, decision-making process, and implementation and then provide recommendations for improvement. Therefore, you will conduct interviews with agency representatives and research related academic sources, the agency’s Website, or any government Website. The analysis will be read by the VP of Accounts and Client Support as well as by the leaders of the agency for whom you are working.

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:
  1. Describe the history of the selected agency and department by explaining its reasons (goals / objectives) for being established. (Title this section History of {Insert name of Agency})
  2. Analyze the organizational design of the selected agency and specific department by describing the design and organizational chart. Assess its effectiveness in making major policy decisions and providing services to its primary recipients. (Title this section Organizational Design.)  
  3. Include a figure of the current organizational design within the text of the paper.
  4. Recommend a redesign of the agency’s structure to serve the needs of the department’s businesses better without jeopardizing the goals / objectives of the agency. Explain your reasoning for changing the design and explain the change’s impact on the agency’s effectiveness in delivering quality services. (Title this section Assessment of Organizational Design.)
  5. Include a figure of the new organizational design within the text of the paper.
  6. Analyze two to three (2-3) major milestones, factors (internal or external), or actors affecting the agency’s success and its influence on the effectiveness of the agency’s planning, organizational design, decision making, and implementation. Also, analyze two to three (2-3) possible causes (internal or external) that appear to have the effect of impeding the organization’s implementation of its policy and for meeting its goals / objectives. (Title this section Evaluation of Planning and Implementation)
  7. Recommend two to three (2-3) strategies (from criteria 4 above) that the agency could implement to improve its effectiveness in the areas of planning, decision making, organization, and / or implementation by explaining each recommendation and providing reasons each recommendation would bring about improvement. (Title this section Recommendations for Planning and Implementation.) 
  8. Include a Cause and Effect Diagram in the text of the paper.
  9. Provide proof of one to two (1-2) interviews by submitting the completed interview forms and a list of questions you asked each interviewee. (Put this in the Appendix under Interview Forms.)
  10. Provide four to five (4-5) relevant and credible outside resources that support the content of this assignment. (Include no more than one (1) non-government Website.)
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The sections must have appropriate titles. The cover page, reference page, and appendix pages are not included in the required assignment page length. The assignment must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEW ANALYSIS INSTRUCTIONS

Assignment Description
You will conduct an interview and write up a case study analyzing the interviewees’ beliefs on education in the context of the theories and thinkers covered in the course. The final document should be 6–8 pages (excluding title, abstract, and reference pages, and appendix).

Specific Guidelines
You will be asked to analyze the statements of another educator in the context of the thinkers covered in this course. Start seeking out a person of interest and line up an interview time early in the course.

The following is a recommended process:
• Identify the person to be interviewed. This person can be a teacher, administrator, or other educational professional working in K-12 or in a higher education environment. Be up-front with the person about your task. You will not use real names in your report.
• Develop 8–10 questions that will get at the heart of their particular worldview and basic philosophical principles. Keep in mind that you want to have enough substantive material to write your paper. As some cannot identify the philosophical basis of their practice as a teacher or administrator (or the like), the recommended approach includes asking questions about practitioner issues so as to see how they approach problems and real-to-life situations. This will provide you with a wonderful analysis. Provide the interview questions as an appendix to your paper.
• During the interview:
o It is recommended to record the interview if you are able. If not recorded, you must take detailed notes.
o Take note of any situational/environmental issues (anything that would have an impact on the interview).
o Be aware of your own bias as you interview. Be sure you are not taking any statements, etc… for granted. Question assumptions on your part.
o Of course, take notes.
• Writing it up/Analysis
o This assignment is really just giving you a tiny taste of real case study analysis. It is not a serious study and does not pretend to be.
o Write up the case using pseudonyms. Be sure to provide the reader with a description of the subject’s role/context, background (if you are able to gather it), your own reporting of what happened, your analysis, and your conclusions. While this seems to be a hefty project – try to keep it under eight pages.
o Your analysis is really an examination of the statements of the subject in light of your knowledge of philosophical leanings in education. This is not merely a summary of the interview; it must be an analysis of the subject’s remarks to the interview questions. Be sure to include specific citations and references to the various people, concepts, and resources addressed in the course text. You are trying to place your subject on the continuum of beliefs. Feel free to be critical.
o Your analysis must include proper citation of at least 5 references.
• Final notes
o You are being assessed on your ability to critically think about the subject’s statements, your knowledge of the philosophical theories, and your writing style (mechanics, spelling, grammar, and APA, etc).
o Have fun with this assignment.

Choose one of the questions below and develop a thesis in response to your interpretation of the book War Dances. Be sure to refer to the book’s stories and/or poems as you write—in other words, use specific examples. You may also draw from your personal experiences as you develop this essay. Avoid extensive summary, aiming instead for extended analysis of the themes, characters, plot ideas, or structure of the text. The paper should be 4-6 typed, double-spaced pages. The questions below suggest an approach to this essay, but you must, as always, come up with the thesis on your own.



1. Most of our experiences in life are filtered through our own unique perception of events. Much of our perception is affected by our own sense of identity—who we are shapes how we “see” to some extent. Choose one or more aspects of identity (i.e. age, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality) that affect how characters in the stories or speakers in the poems in War Dances experience events in their life. Discuss the relationships between one’s identity and their thoughts and/or actions. Use specific examples to illustrate these points.
2. Many of the stories and most of the poetry have to do with modern-day males’ expression of emotion. Emotionality is sometimes considered the flip-side of rationality, wherein one’s reason can balance one’s feelings. Of course this works well as long as one achieves and maintains a balance. Choose characters in the stories or poems in War Dances that show men dealing with, or trying to deal with, their powerful emotions. What are the challenges? Who/What is successful? What, if anything, does this examination of male emotion in the book show to readers?

3. Human beings are both unique individuals as well as social animals. That is, our membership in group(s) (familial, tribal, cultural, etc.) and our relationships with other people may be nearly as important as our individual sense of identity. Analyze some of the relationships shown in the poems and stories in War Dances. What do these relationships show about the characters/speakers?

4. In the story “The Senator’s Son,” the father tells the son, “[w]e are tested, all of us. We are constantly and consistently given the choice. Good or evil. Light or darkness. Love or hate. Some of those decisions are huge and tragic” (pp.91-2). Choose some of the poems and/or stories from the book where characters are tested. What choices did they make? How did they come to terms with those choices? What does it show? Are there dichotomies other than those from the above quote, which inform your understanding of the themes in War Dances?
