Family Representations on Television

Objective

Sociologists learn much of what they know about families from observations, survey research and qualitative interviews.  For this paper, you will have the opportunity to engage in some of the methods that sociologist use to gather information—in this case interviews or content analysis.  You will be able to get a glimpse into how families and family life are depicted or interpreted by different people and how it relates back to what?

Directions

Select one of the three options below to complete.  Follow the guidelines and complete all requirements for the option.

Option 1  Family Representations on Television

Watch six television programs that feature families. Three of these programs must be from before 1965 and three of them must be from after 1995. In your paper, you must do the following:
Briefly describe the family structures depicted in each show.
Compare and contrast the families in the earlier and later programs.
What are the gender roles in the families depicted?  How do they compare to what you have learned in class?  Be sure to use example from the episodes that you viewed.
What are the childrearing practices like?  Who does what?  Give examples from the episodes you watched
Make connections to the course material.  You need to discuss trends, theories, and concepts that you have learned about and how they relate to what was depicted in the programs you viewed.
Finally, based on what you have learned so far in this course, discuss whether the earlier programs or the later programs are more realistic in portraying family life. Why do you believe this is true? Keep in mind that family structures and the roles of family members may have changed greatly between 1965 and 1995.

Option 2  Relationship Resolution

 Interview all of the following:
1.  A couple that has cohabitated for less than two years
2.  A married couple who cohabitated before marriage
3.  A couple who married before living together (never cohabited)

If possible, interview the partners separately. Ask the couples about what they think the components of a successful relationship are. What do they do to make their relationships work? How often do they have disagreements? What are the disagreements about? How are problems solved? How is domestic work divided up in the household (gender roles)? Feel free to ask any other questions that interest you. After you have completed the interviews, compare the couples’ answers in your paper.  Make connections to the course material.  You need to discuss trends, theories, and concepts that you have learned about and how they relate to what was expressed in your interviews.

Option 3  Grandparent Interview

Interview both of your grandparents and both of your parents.  If you do not have access to your grandparents, you may interview someone who is of the same age of your grandparents (preferably age 65 or above).  If possible, interview each of them separately. Ask your participants about how they think things have changed in family expectations since they were young and started a family. Also ask them about what gender roles their parents performed growing up, what they did when raising a family, and how that compares to their children. In your paper, you should compare and contrast the roles and expectations of each generation and then compare them to the gender role expectations of your generation and in your family.  You will also need to make connections to the course material by discussing trends, theories, and concepts that you have learned about and how they relate to what was expressed in your interviews.

Outside Sources

Though you should be making connections to the course material in your paper, outside sources are not required.  If you choose to bring in outside sources to support your argument (in the way of statistics, research findings, or other empirical evidence), be sure to use proper citation using either the ASA or the APA style guides.  If you are unsure how to do this, see me or refer to the Online Writing Lab at Perdue (http://owl.english.purdue.edu).  The website has numerous resources for citing sources and using proper writing mechanics.

Format

Papers should be approximately 6-7 pages in length.  Use 12pt Times New Roman font with 1” margins all around.  Papers should be double spaced.  Be sure to proofread; papers with excessive spelling and grammatical errors will be docked points.  I suggest having a friend read over it for you or reading it out loud to yourself.  There are also writing centers on campus that can help you if you are having trouble composing your paper.

Your paper should consist of the following sections: introduction, company overview, horizontal analysis, ratio analysis, final recommendation, and conclusions. Your paper needs to include a minimum of two scholarly resources in addition to the textbook as references.
Here is a breakdown of the sections within the body of the assignment:

Company Overview (you can use any publicly traded company)
Provide a brief overview of your company (one to two paragraphs at most). What industry is it in? What are its main products or services? Who are its competitors?

Horizontal Analysis of Income Statement and Balance Sheet

Discuss liquidity issues of competitive companies within the same industry.

Analyze Shakespeare’s characterization of love- not only in the play’s action but also in the words of the love obsessed characters

Write a polished five page essay in which you develop an analysis that responds to one of the following prompts.

Your text poses a series of suggestions for writing on page 1459.
Write an essay on suggestions 1, 2, 5 or 6.

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s best known speech, Theseus asserts that “The lunatic, the lover, and the poet/ Are of imagination all compact” (5.1.7-8). Citing evidence from the play, write an essay analyzing Shakespeare’s characterization of love- not only in the play’s action but also in the words of the love obsessed characters. Is Shakespearean love merely a kind of madness, or does it contain hints of a guiding wisdom beyond the awareness of the lovers themselves?

Early in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Helena remarks, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind” (1.1.234). The play is filled with references to eyes and vision; indeed, the plot hinges on the differences between what characters see and what they think they see. Using specific examples, write an essay exploring the significance of eyes, sight, seeing in the play. What does the play suggest about the power and the limitations of human vision?
5. In a Midsummer Night’s Dream, characters perform a play. What are the functions and effects of this device? What might the plays within plays suggest about the value of drama- including the value of plays like Shakespeare’s own? What different attitudes toward drama are displayed by various characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream? Write an essay exploring the function and significance of these plays within plays. What attitude toward drama does Shakespeare encourage us to adopt?

6. Write an essay exploring the characterization of the socially lowly characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and their thematic significance. What might be noteworthy about when such characters appear? Might some or all of these characters dispay a wisdom lacking in their social betters? If so, what is it?

Remember when you are forming an analysis and explication to be the central thrust of your paper, ask yourself the question, and the answer will be your working thesis. Working is the operative word because you must consider other possible answers to your question – opposing viewpoints. Including these opposing viewpoints and then giving evidence and proof is what will make a strong paper. It will also make your final thesis one which is thoughtful and sound. Also, as you research, don’t just look in your outside sources for confirmation of your viewpoint, but consider all viewpoints. You may change your thesis as you continue your research, but this will ultimately strengthen your paper.

Articulate your thesis near the start of your paper, at the end of your introduction, then in the body of your paper work to convince your reader of how one arrives at your viewpoint through analysis of the text and support from outside sources. Remember that if a thesis is not arguable, then it is a statement of fact, and not a thesis at all.

This paper should follow all relevant MLA guidelines for a research paper. This means double-spaced text, one inch margins, name and page number on each page, and proper citation of all quotes and secondary sources. Use standard 12 pt font, such as times new roman or arial. Please remember that you must use at least two secondary, academic sources (one of these is NOT the primary text).

Remember that an excellent essay develops your original ideas and analysis clearly and thoroughly. To this end, it is helpful, when writing, to create an outline. In particular, if focusing on a symbol, begin by simply re-reading the poems and write down what you identify as symbols. Consider what a symbol is, and consider how this symbol may be used differently at different times in the book. How does this change its conveyed meaning? In terms of what we have previously labeled “counter-argument,” consider what may be other possible meanings to the symbol.
