Kansas City

The larger significance of this film involves the process with which race or blackness is associated with criminality, the very subtle role of minstrelsy in the film, and period specific constructions of masculinity and femininity. While Belfonte's Seldom Seen character is a riveting take on Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone, the association between vice and jazz is made explicit. True, this was in many respects the music of the red light districts, but you need to begin thinking about how this association has imapcted the way that we view the musical genius of jazz.
Consider the followng questions when writing your response to viewing the film.

(1.) In the first chapter of Krin Gabbard’s Jammin’ at the Margins, Gabbard writes of blackface as a transformative device enabling white performers to appropriate aspects of African American masculinity. How does blackface function in the early scenes of Kansas City?

(2.) How does Robert Altman establish links between jazz music / musicians and criminality?

(3.) What is the role of jazz in this film? What does this film communicate about jazz?

(4.) What form(s) of masculinity are expressed though Harry Belafonte’s “Seldom Seen” character? What forms of masculinity are expressed by the jazz musicians in his club?

(5.) Pause one of your favorite scenes in Kansas City and examine issues of staging, applying an analysis of mise-en-scene. What conclusions can you reach about relationships between characters or commentaries on issues of race, class, gender, etc.?
