Midwestern Archaeological site

ou will choose an archaeological site that interests you and write a research paper about that site. You should use books, journal articles and reports as your source material for this paper. Some use of web content is permitted but you cannot rely on it as your major resource. You will need to choose a site in the Midwest from any time period and describe it.

Submission will be through canvas
Papers will be evaluated by turnitin when posted to canvas
3. Paper length is 8-10 typed double spaced pages—I can tell if you inflate your paper via large text, extra spacing, wide margins so do not do it!

4. You need to locate multiple resources for your paper. Listing a few websites is not research worthy. You must find academic papers and or books. JSTOR and anthrosource are two good online library resources for locating journal articles. Google scholar can also help you locate articles pertaining to a topic that you can then access through the library gateway. Scanning the library shelves is always a great way to locate appropriate texts.

5. Paper topic can be any archaeological site in the Midwest that we did NOT discuss in class.

6. You must minimally:

a. Present a site description

b. Present a brief history of investigations at the site, how do we know what we know about this site?

c. What archaeological evidence is used to interpret the site? Features? Artifacts? Monuments?

d. Briefly discuss site location, where, why there, does this matter?

e. Discuss time period and archaeological culture, how well does your site represent what we know about this time period or is it unique?

f. To accomplish the above Use course material, ie sites we have discussed and read about to compare and contrast with your chosen site—cite this material!

g. Use topical articles to discuss your site, for example if you choose an Adena site, how does your research compare with the reading by B. Clay? Were your sites analysts following his critique of Webb or do they use Webb’s categories? –cite this material!

h. What does your site help explain about the past? Why is it important?

i. A conclusion where you evaluate the information that you located and how well it does the job.

Your grade will depend on choosing an appropriate site and addressing the above (which will be used as a grading rubric). Finding appropriate research material and citing it AS WELL AS course material are critical to a good grade

Does Clint Eastwood's Bird establish Charles “Yardbird” Parker as an artist or artist of a high art

(1) Does Clint Eastwood's Bird establish Charles “Yardbird” Parker as an artist or artist of a high art? Discuss at least one scene and the mise-en-scene details of that scene that establishes Parker as a high artist. If you do not think the film establishes Parker as a high artist, analyze one scene that undermines Parker's status as a high artist.

(2) Krin Gabbard speaks of a “cult of the white jazz artist” (129). Examine a scene in Bird involving the Red Rodney character. Bird's southern chitlin' circuit tour might provide ample data. Is Rodney idealized in the same fashion that Gabbard discusses? Are there any parallels between Rodney and the treatment of Gerry Mulligan in film? What function does Red Rodney perform in Bird?

(3) Gabbard acknowledges that the bebop form of jazz music has now come to signify the apex of the development of jazz music. After watching Bird, what did Eastwood's film communicate to you about the development of bebop music? Strictly in terms of the film, what was the revolution in bebop all about? How did Charlie Parker arrive at his ideas? Where did bebop originate? How well was it received throughout the country? What replaced bebop?
