What is the nature of scientific reasoning, according to Bronowski

Must have ( The Norton Reader 13th ed. )

be able to answer some questions regarding these readings:-

-Henry David Thoreau, “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For” (1098)
-Jacob Bronowski, “The Nature of Scientific Reasoning” (886)
-Stephen Hawking, “Is Everything Determined?” (908)
– http://research.uvu.edu/albrecht-crane/486RKafka/Nietzsche.pdf (ONLINE)

Here are the questions:-

1. What is the nature of scientific reasoning, according to Bronowski? What role does imagination play? Does this differ from the picture painted by Weinberg?
2. Why does Thoreau call the average person a “sleeper”? How does this lifestyle differ from living “deliberately”?

3. There are some striking parallels among “The Allegory of the Cave,” “Existentialism,” and “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For.” What are they?

4.There was progress made regarding Sartre's notion of lawmakers, but I'd like to take this opportunity to lay out exactly what Sartre means. Whenever we perform an action we implicitly make a statement about reality. If we say that we believe in gravity, for example, we also say something about the trustworthiness of science, observational evidence, mathematics, our perceptions, and history. We are saying something about how the universe operates on a large scale while staking a great deal of faith in our own ability to accurately perceive that universe. Every one of our beliefs are, by necessity, part of a much larger belief system, and every time we perform an action we make a statement about the nature of reality. Thus, when we engage the world, even in the most rudimentary ways, we expect others to participate in the universe we've envisioned, the world as we see it. And the more people we can get to agree with us, the more canonical and binding our beliefs become. Subsequently, if we are born into a capitalist economy, we are expected to value money. If we are born into a heteronormative society, we are expected to act straight. If we are born into a world that fetishizes scientific knowledge, labeling Newton's theory of gravity as a “law of nature,” we are expected to regard the scientific theories of our age as self-evident. This is why Sartre calls every person a “lawmaker.” If we engage the world, we do so as creators and sustainers of “truth,” expecting others to participate in the reality we've constructed.

So why has Western culture, at large, resisted Einstein's ideas about gravity, and how does this relate to Sartre's notion of lawmakers? Does this tell us anything about how “truth” functions in culture?

For anyone who's curious, this video explains general relativity pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEZupmpTcOU. Basically, orbiting planets are traveling along curved space created by the Sun. Gravitational “pull” is a myth.

5. What is Hawking's argument, in a nutshell?

6. What is Nietzsche's argument, in a nutshell?

7. What makes scientific knowledge and empirical observation untrustworthy, in Nietzsche's opinion?

8. How does Nietzsche's notion of “truth” relate to “The Allegory of the Cave” and Sartre's notion of “lawmakers”?

Nearly all authors from this term address cultural or social problems in their writings

Research Essay

Your paper should demonstrate a grasp of both the primary text(s) you choose to write on and the critical materials available. This means that you must show an understanding of the reliability of critical materials, how to find scholarly criticism, and an ability to judge whether a work is dated or current. While some topics will have more or less critical materials available than others, I advise a 3 source minimum. You may want to consider biographical materials, letters, print history, journals, or other such sources as well.
1) Nearly all authors from this term address cultural or social problems in their writings. Does a writer’s political agenda detract from a poem’s aesthetic value, or do activism and artistry combine to make a text stronger? Discuss the relationship between activism and art.
2) Some of the texts in our readings appear to “react” to or “reflect” social problems, such as race in The Call of Cthulhu. Other texts appear to “comment on” or “critique” social problems, such as “The Yellow Wallpaper.” What is the difference, if there is a difference, between these two kinds of texts?

My expectation:
– follow the instruction.
– cite and quote properly.
– adviod using TOO fancy vocab.
– keep sentense simple.
– College level. (I am an ESL student from Taiwan. My teacher knows what to expect from an ESL student.)

I will upload 1-2 reading materials if you pick the first topic.
If you pick the topic 2, you can find the article online.

Charasmatic leadership in management

The purpose of this research project is for you to create a scholarly piece of graduate-level research and writing which conforms to APA format. Competency in APA format is required of all Business graduates of Liberty University, as set forth by policy of both the Graduate Faculty and the administration.

You will research and write a literature review on a topic relevant to our course. You will have approximately 7 weeks to research and write the paper. By Module/week 2, your instructor will provide details regarding the approved topics for this assignment. Please be sure to check the Announcement page and your email for the approved topics. Simply select a topic and then begin working on the project. Do not recycle any work from any previous courses you have taken. Your research paper will be a comprehensive thematic review of the scholarly literature related to your topic.

What is a Literature Review?
“A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and sometimes information in a particular subject area within a certain time period. It has an organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis. The summary is a recap of the important information of the source; the synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations. Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the field, including major debates. And depending on the situation, the literature review may evaluate the sources and advise the reader on what is the most pertinent or relevant.”

How is a literature review different from an academic research paper?
“While the main focus of an academic research paper is to support your own argument, the focus of a literature review is to summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of others.” The academic research paper also covers a range of sources, but it is usually a select number of sources, because the emphasis is on the argument. Likewise, a literature review can also have an “argument,” but it is not as important as covering a number of sources. In short, an academic research paper and a literature review contain some of the same elements. In fact, many academic research papers will contain a literature review section. But it is the aspect of the study (the argument or the sources) that is emphasized that determines what type of document it is.

Why write literature reviews?
“Literature reviews provide you with a handy guide to a particular topic. If you have limited time to conduct research, literature reviews can give you an overview or act as a stepping stone. For professionals, they are useful reports that keep them up to date with what is current in the field. For scholars, the depth and breadth of the literature review emphasizes the credibility of the writer in his or her field. Literature reviews also provide a solid background for a research paper's investigation. Comprehensive knowledge of the literature of the field is essential to most research papers.”

What is the format for literature reviews?
“Just like most academic papers, literature reviews also must contain at least three basic elements: an introduction or background information section; the body of the review containing the discussion of sources; and, finally, a conclusion and/or recommendations section to end the paper.
• Introduction: Gives a quick idea of the topic of the literature review, such as the central theme or organizational pattern.
• Body: Contains your discussion of sources and is organized thematically (see below for more information on each).
• Conclusions/Recommendations: Discuss what you have drawn from reviewing literature so far. Where might the discussion proceed?”

What is a thematic literature review?
“A thematic review would have subtopics based upon factors that relate to the theme or issue.
Sometimes, though, you might need to add additional sections that are necessary for your study, but do not fit in the organizational strategy of the body. What other sections you include in the body is up to you. Put in only what is necessary. Here are a few other sections you might want to consider:
• Current Situation: Information necessary to understand the topic or focus of the literature review.
• History: The chronological progression of the field, the literature, or an idea that is necessary to understand the literature review, if the body of the literature review is not already a chronology.
• Methods and/or Standards: The criteria you used to select the sources in your literature review or the way in which you present your information. For instance, you might explain that your review includes only peer-reviewed articles and journals.
• Questions for Further Research: What questions about the field has the review sparked? How will you further your research as a result of the review?”

Important Points to Consider
The paper is to be written in strict conformance to APA standards and must contain at least 10–12 pages of content (excluding the title page, abstract, and references) utilizing at least 15 scholarly references.

The paper is to be posted in the SafeAssign software area at the end of Module/Week 8. It is highly recommended that each student download and read the instructions to avoid any stress created by issues that are the result of waiting until the last minute.
• A SafeAssign draft check area will be provided for you to use to improve your Originality Score prior to your final submission.

Three levels of APA headings should be used throughout the paper as this is a graduate-level research paper.
Some students do not fully understand the difference between plagiarism and paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is when you take a source or someone else's idea and say it in your own words. When you paraphrase, you must still give the author's name, date, title of the source, the scholarly journal where it came from, and the exact website address or book.

However, when you directly quote a source, it must have quotation marks around the quote or (if 40 words or more) it must be set in block quotation format. If you directly quote anyone, you must set it in quotation marks or block quotation and give detailed information of where you acquired the quote.

For the purpose of this academic paper, please adhere to the follow rules when quoting or using a source:
• Do not directly quote more than 120 words from any one source.
• If the source is 2,000 words or less, do not directly quote more than 50 words from any one source.
• Do not use the same source more than a total of 3 times within the whole document for quoting or paraphrasing.
• Quotes must contain the section (if provided) and paragraph or page numbers of the quote and this information must be placed in the reference.
• In all instances, be sure to use the APA guidelines for citations and references.

The paper must not be a series of quotations.

Marketing

Refer to the cereal company scenario described in Module 4 in which you are to assume that a breakfast cereal manufacturer wants to learn more about the breakfast habits and preferences of the general population so that, as they evaluate marketing opportunities in different metropolitan areas, they will be better able to predict the success of different approaches to their marketing mix. You have decided to use a survey to gather the data you need.

As part of the project, you would like to test several hypotheses you have developed regarding the company’s marketing mix. Your marketing research firm’s manager has asked for certain details of your plan for the project. Your response must include:
An explanation of the advantages and the disadvantages of survey methods.
A description of the situational characteristics, the task characteristics and the respondent characteristics that are factors that should be considered when selecting the survey research design for a marketing research project.
Your recommendation for use of either a person-administered survey method, a telephone-administered survey method, an e-mail survey, or an Internet survey method and the justification for your choice.
Statements of each of the four hypotheses to be tested (one for each element of the marketing mix).
A statement of the null hypothesis to accompany each hypothesis statement.
An explanation of the benefits of hypothesis testing.
A description of the statistical technique that should be used for testing each of the hypotheses and an explanation of why that technique should be used.
An example or description of a perceptual map and a supported recommendation of whether perceptual mapping should be part of the project.
Write a 6- to 8-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards for writing style to your work.

By Saturday, June 21, 2014 deliver your assignment to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox.
