FINA 408 Individual Final Company Analysis Project The Final Company Analysis Project is worth 30% of your final grade in the course. The paper is graded on a 100-point scale. The following describes the breakdown of points available: 25 points for ORGANIZATION This is a long and complicated paper, so it is essential that you are organized in your presentation of the information. Please be sure to present each item in the order suggested by the outline and have clear headings and sub-headings to make it easy to follow. Also, it is important to organize the paper in a way that prevents the reader from having to flip back and forth from one section to another to follow the discussion (e.g., ensure that each ratio/calculation is discussed immediately after it is presented, rather than having a separate table elsewhere in the report. To receive the full amount of points for this category, be sure to provide thorough discussion of your analysis process and an explanation of what the ration/calculation means. It is important to demonstrate that you have a good understanding of why each calculation was done, and what information can be learned from it. Also, in this section I remove points for any situation where I feel that the analysis presented is not the students’ original work (i.e., taken from another source without attribution.) While you can certainly refer to other analysts’ work regarding your company, please be sure to conduct your own analyses and draw your own conclusions throughout the paper. 25 points for THOROUGHNESS In order to receive the full amount of points available for this portion of the paper, you must include every item listed on the general outline provided at the beginning of the course. Points will be removed if any item is missing from the analysis. In this category, I am assessing the extent to which the entire report provides a complete analysis of the company, utilizing the steps we practiced throughout the course. Do you tie it all together with connecting themes and findings? Or, is it just a list of the various calculations with a sentence or two in between explaining each. A successful paper will present a congruous and thorough analysis of the company with insightful and thoughtful commentary throughout. The most recent data should be used in your analyses (i.e., data from the most recently-filed Form 10-K). For all calculations, show each formula used as well as the numbers used in the formula. Explain any assumptions made and provide justifications for your assumptions. Cite any sources used other than the company’s SEC filings. The following is an outline for your individual project: I. Governance and Communication Analysis i. Listen to a recording of an analyst call (AKA earnings call or quarterly conference call) for your company. Listen to about 15-20 minutes of the call and write a summary of your observations, including any questions that you might have wanted to ask the CEO/CFO, etc. b. Answer and discuss the importance of the following: i. Who is the company’s current CEO? Is he or she also the Chair of the Board? ii. Who serves on the board’s Audit Committee? How many members are Financial Experts? What experience qualifies them for that designation? iii. What was the CEO paid last year? What portion of his or her total pay was in the form of bonus? In the form of stock-based awards? What performance measures were used to determine the CEO’s pay? iv. Who or what entity holds the highest percentage of the company's stock? Are most of the beneficial owners reported individuals or institutions? v. How many common shares are outstanding? Is there more than one class of common stock outstanding? If so how many votes do each share of each class get? c. Discuss your opinion regarding the effectiveness of the governance and communication of the company. II. Industry and Strategy Analysis 1. Guidelines for designing a research paper 1. What are you interested in?
If you don’t have a specific topic in mind yet, ask yourself what you’re interested in. Are you interested in politics? In gender? In military history? In environmental history? Once you’ve decided that, your next step should be to choose a time period.
2. Get acquainted with the basic chronology and the main players.
For your proposal, you’ll need to specify who your historical agents and actors are. For example, a paper on the Second Boer War might focus on politicians and military officers, or on the press and public opinion.
Do some preliminary research. See what comes up on Google Scholar – has your topic been written about by scholars? For the nineteenth century, sites like http://www.victorianweb.org/can be helpful. If you want details about a particular person or group of people, check out the http://www.oxforddnb.com/. Wikipedia might be a good way to help you figure out major events and dates – but that is its only role in the research process. Wikipedia is not a scholarly source and it should never appear in a bibliography. 3. What’s your central question? What’s your answer? Why should anybody care? Every thesis statement answers a question (or a series of closely related questions). Coming up with a strong argument depends on coming up with a strong question. The best research questions are “why” questions; the second-best research questions are “how” questions. “Why” and “how” questions force you to address causality and change over time –the goals of a historian. The first step is to take a factual or yes/no question and turn it into a more interesting problem: “What did the British government do during the Irish famine?” “How did the British government react to Irish famine?” Once you’ve become more familiar with the topic, you can change it again: “Why did the British government fail to provide more material assistance to Ireland during the famine?” The original question produces a statement of fact, not an argument: “The British government set up ‘make work’ projects and soup kitchens during the famine, but both attempts at relief were eventually abandoned” The revised questions yield an argument: “The British government’s commitment to Malthusian ‘moral restraint’ led them to believe that withholding material aid would ultimately lay the foundations for recovery.”
This last example also lets your reader know why your topic matters and why your argument is relevant: in this case, it is related to the influence of liberalism.
4. What kind of sources will you use? In your paper, you’ll want to use at least four different secondary sources. These must be scholarly sources – ie, books or articles in peer-reviewed journals. Your paper should also use at least three primary sources. 5. On 31 March, turn in a proposal. Your proposal should include the following: a working title; a brief description of your topic (the time period, events, and historical actors); your central question(s); and a working bibliography comprising primary and secondary sources. If you have a hypothesis or preliminary thesis, you should include it – but don’t invent one for the sake of it.

Religious Analysis and Interpretation
For this essay, you must choose one of following topics and submit your response via the Assignment Dropbox. You do not have to use external sources for this essay (the book chapters and the corresponding power point presentations should be sufficient).
1.Define the part of theology that is technically known as theodicy. Pick an example of extraordinary evil in the world and present it briefly. Use your example to explain the relevance of the problem of theodicy. Why is theodicy said to be more central to monotheistic religions than to other forms of religion?
2.What role does salvation play in religion, both for the individual and the whole community? Give an example of how an individual can perceive salvation and explain the ways he/she follows in order to attain it (for example, you can explain how a Buddhist perceives nirvana and seeks to achieve it by following the way of meditation).
•Your essay should be 750-900 words, double spaced, using Times New Roman, size 12 font.
•It is not necessary to use outside sources or provide a works cited page. However, if you quote something directly from the course material, you must use quotation marks and provide in-text citations (MLA style). Also, if you decide to use outside sources, you must fully cite them.
•Since this is a formal paper, you must present a structured essay with an introduction, main body, and a conclusion. Do not use contractions.
•Read the essay prompt carefully and make sure that you are addressing the correct concepts and classifications.
Below is a list of the most common issues preventing students from earning an A.
•Lack of structure/organization: Since this is a formal paper, you must present a structured essay with an introduction, main body, and a conclusion (several essays were missing a conclusion)
•Missing information: Read the essay prompt carefully and make sure that you are addressing the correct concepts and classifications.
•Less than the required length: Your essay should be at least 750 words (excluding the heading, works cited, or any additional text).
•Grammar: Proofread your essay before submission. Do not use contractions.
•Format: This does not impact your grade significantly, but you should always use the format required by your instructor, in this case MLA. If you use direct quotes or decide to use an outside source, you must cite properly (in-text citations).
